Looking back at the just concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. We saw a lot of high end Windows 10 laptops, tablets, 2-in-1s and phones from top Microsoft OEM partners like Dell, Toshiba, HP, Samsung, Acer, Asus, even Alcatel.
The Surface Pro 3 undoubtedly set the stage for high end tablets/2-in-1s running Windows 10 from Microsoft’s partners. That’s just Microsoft leading by example and it has been well received.
I recently took a look at Samsung’s recently announced TabPro, which is a Windows 10 2-in-1 tablet (like the Surface Pro 4) and it is really nice to see many OEMs jumping on this design.
That being said, what about Windows 10 Mobile? So far the only high end Windows 10 Mobile devices are the Lumia 950 and 950XL, I owuld include the Acer Jade Primo, but that wouldn’t be released until next month, February.
So what does Microsoft have to do to inspire its OEMs to produce high end Windows 10 Mobile devices?
I’ve got two suggestions:
First, Microsoft needs to make a Surface Pro 3 like phone (Surface Phone), that’s so badass (like the SP3) that OEMs would be inspired to produce something similar. There has been a lot of rumour of such a device in the works, spearheaded by the talented guy behind the Surface Pro 3: Panos Panay.
Secondly, Microsoft needs to offer some type of incentive to its OEMs to produce Windows 10 Mobile devices, there are already rumors of a Windows 10 Mobile device coming from HP, but that’s all specualtion at this point, but what about other OEMs: Lenovo? Toshiba? Dell? they could and should use the Windows market space to launch Windows 10 mobile phones. I am actually surprised that an OEM such as Lenovo which makes most of its profit from PCs hasn’t released a Windows 10 mobile device yet!
These Microsoft OEM partners have shown how good they are in making Windows 10 hardware, it is time Microsoft gets them to make Windows 10 mobile devices too.
But it is important to note that Windows 10 Mobile is far from complete, the Lumia 950 and 950XL doesn’t inspire confidence design wise.
That being said, a lot will rest on the completion of Windows 10 Mobile OS and the Surface Phone this year
